Houson G. Russell was born in Virginia about 1833. Parents Jamerson Russell and Catherine Adams were married in Pittsylania in 1830.
Houson married Elendor Tankersley November 27, 1856, and the couple was living in the Laurel Grove area of Pittsylvania in 1860. They had two sons at the time, William(born March 14, 1858), and Charles, born in 1860. Houson working as a wheelwright.
Laurel Grove was the center for recruiting Company C of the 38th Virginia Infantry. Houson joined that unit in 1861, and became a Sergeant.
Housin would survive the war.
In 1870, the Russells were living in the Dan River area, Houson still working as a wheelwright. (The names were somewhat misread):
