Alfred was born in 1827. He was the son of Lorenzo Russell and Eleanor Duncan. He passed away after 1865. Colonel A.A. Russell was a doctor prior to the Civil War. After the war broke out, he formed Russell's Rangers and was elected Colonel. After the war ended in 1865, Alfred refused to swear allegiance to the United States and left for Mexico, where it is said he started or purchased a coffee farm. It is also said he would sneak back into the United States to visit friends and relatives.
The July 29,1890 issue of 'The Stevenson Chronicle" reports: " Col.A.A. Russell Commander of the 4th Alabama Cavalry in the Confederate army , who now lives in Mexico, was in attendance upon the Reunion at Huntsville. Col. Russell is an old citizen of Stevenson and has many warm friends here. He went into the war from here, and many of his old command still live in the county. He is a man who knew no fear in battle, and he only asked the gallant command under him to follow where he led. He spent several days in the neighborhood last week."
