William was born about 1842 to Uriah Wiley Russell and Lucinda Crow.[1] In 1861 he married Sarah Eliza More[2] and they had one son, James Franklin.
In 1861 during the U.S. Civil War, William enlisted in the Union Army.[3] After his discharge 6 months later, he returned home where he was murdered by Rebel Guerrillas.[4]
