He accompanied his father, Sir Henry Russell, the 1st Baronet, in May of 1798 to Calcutta, where he was appointed a writer in November 1798. He was Assistant Secretary to the Resident at Hyderabad in 1800; Secretary, 1802. He was the third member of the Commission appointed to investigate the claims of the Nawab of Carnatic in 1807. Henry was the Officiating Resident at Poona in 1809 and the British Representative at the Court of Hyderabad between 1811 and 1820, during the Mahratta-Pindari War.
Henry Russell died in 1852 at Berkshire, England.[1] DIED.—On the 19th, at Swallowfield, in the county of Berks, Sir Henry Russell, Bart., in his 69th year.[2]
He was buried at All Saints Churchyard, Swallowfield, Wokingham Borough, Berkshire, England.[3]
