John Russell was born on January 25, 1748, in Central Somers, Connecticut. He is the son of William Russell and Sarah Emery.
He served in the Revolutionary War as an Ensign in the Connecticut militia under Captain Phineas Lovejoy and Colonel Rogers Enos.
He had six children with Lovisa Cooley between 1780 and 1795. He died on November 3, 1826, in his hometown, having lived a long life of 78 years, and was buried there.
