Most censuses agree that Jacob was born about 1858 in Minnesota Territory. (1900 census)
He signed a land deed with both his Anglo and Hocąk names, the latter of which was rendered NA-HAS-KAW. (BMI) This appears to be for Nąhāska(ga), from ną, "tree"; hā, "bark, hide, skin"; ska, "pale, white"; and dropped is -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names. The "white bark tree" is the birch, so the name means, "Birch."
His first marriage was to Nellie Kengsley. (ML Ida Russell) Ida H. Russell was their daughter, born ca. 1877. Nellie must have died before 1883, when Jacob married Mary St. Cyr.
His second marriage was to Mary St. Cyr Londrosh. The official license gives the date of marriage as 21 Dec 1892, but there are two clarifying, handwritten notes appended: "This is intended to take the place of a Winnebago license issued by us to these same parties Oct. 20th 1883, but which was ____ placed and received as it should have been. Kelley W. Frazer." The second note at the bottom of the page reads, "Parties were married Oct. 20th 1883." The second license was granted 21 Dec 1892 in Dakota County. Since the same Judge Frazer presided over the first wedding, we may conclude that it too was conducted in Dakota County, Nebraska. Witnesses for the second ceremony were Josephine Armell and Little Thunder. (ML)
His third marriage was to Night Walking Woman. (1910, 1914, 1917 censuses)
With his first wife, Nellie Kengsley, he had Ida H., who appears to be the same person who is called "Alice" in the 1889 census, as both were born in 1877, but are never listed together. His eldest son, James B. (b. 1880), is likely also an offspring of Nellie since he was born before Jacob's official marriage to Mary in 1883. With Mary he had the female twins Ada and Etta in 1886. (1892 Ind. census) He may have had another child, Jacob Jr. (b. 1898), out of wedlock, as this Jacob was living next door to both Jacob himself, and Jacob's son James on 30 June 1910, after his wife Mary had died. (1910 Ind. census) However, the Federal census of the same year shows Jacob Sr. living with Night Walking Woman as his wife, so perhaps she is Jacob Jr.'s mother.
In 1897, Jacob was working as a carpenter for $400 per annum at the Omaha-Winnebago Agency in Nebraska. (Register) In 1879, he was listed as an apprentice (presumably to this trade), where he was making $5 a month. (Register)
On 12/9/1893, Jacob bought two parcels of land (160 acres) in the Winnebago Reservation in Thurston County, Nebraska: T 026N - R 006E, N½ SE¼ and the adjacent S½ NE¼ of Section 14, bounded by Middle Creek and Road 18. This is Indian Allotment 264. (BLM)
Since he was recorded in the census of 30 June 1916, but noted as dead in the 1917 census, he must have died sometime between those dates, probably on the reservation in Winnebago, Nebraska. (1916 census, Find a Grave, Etta Hunter)
