Margaret Russell was born 11 May 1803 and baptised on 29 May; a daughter of Robert Russell and Marian Waterstone.^[1]

She married John Donaldson in 1822^[2]

Together they had 7 known children

She is recorded in the census of 1841 living at Broom Knoll, Airdrie with husband John Donaldson and 5 children: Janet (Jess), Marian, John, Alexander, and Douglas.^[3]

1851 In the census she is recorded with husband John and 5 children John, Alexander, Douglas, Mary & Robert at 55 Bell Street, Airdrie.^[4]

1861 In the census she is recorded with her youngest [known] 3 children Douglas, Mary, and Robert; aged 60, a widow, working as a Pirn Winder, and living on Bell Street, Airdrie.^[5]

She passed away on the 13 March 1863 at 63 Bell Street, Airdrie.^[6]

Margaret, wife of John Donaldson, mother of Janet, Marion, John, Alexander, Douglas, Mary, and Robert has been incorrectly identified on many trees.

The identity of Margaret is evident — she is named as Margaret Russell in the marriage between her and John, and on the death certificates of Janet, Marian, Alexander, Douglas and Robert. Also on the marriage certificate of Alexander to his 2nd wife Euphemia and Mary's marriage certificate to Robert Hood.

Her identity as Margaret Russell is further supported by multiple DNA matches with descendants of Robert Russell and Marian Waterstone
