Biography

Jacob is the son of Jacob Russell and Elizabeth Marce. He accompanied his parents and siblings on the journey to Canada after the family's expulsion from the U.S. at the end of the Revolutionary War. He was baptized, along with his siblings, at the Maugerville Anglican Church on March 10, 1789.[1] Early family records also identify John Russell as a son of Jacob.[2]

Research Notes

Disputed Existence of Son Jacob
Many online trees on Ancestry and elsewhere do not recognize the existence of this man's son Jacob (1793), attributing the marriage of Mary Deforest to this Jacob Russell (abt.1775-). This is a complicated problem. In 1789, the entire family including this Jacob (b.1775) were baptized as adults at the Maugerville church. But in 1793, three additional Russell's, presumably children, were baptized in the same church including one named Jacob. It makes more sense that this Jacob born c.1793 would be the man marrying in 1823. His parents are not clearly listed anywhere, but analyzing the patriarch Jacob Russell's will and that of his wife, it seems by far the most likely that Jacob (1793) was the son of this man. Hopefully more research can unravel this problem.
On a personal note - There is a possibility that this man, the Jacob born in 1775 according to the current trees, was actually older and born earlier than this date. The senior Jacob and his oldest three sons were involved in numerous land petitions and sales in the early years of the colony and I am certain that I saw a petition from the late 1780's that showed both Jacob and Jacob Jr involved. Family Search has a large collection of early petitions that need to be searched. I think I saw it there, but have lost where I recorded it many moons ago. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jacob by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jacob:
