Biography

Amasa Russell is said to be the son of Barnabas Russell & Judith (Penney) Russell. Barnabas was still of Worcester County, MA, when Amasa was born in circa 1761 & this must be the location of Amasa's birth.[1]

Amasa is found in a descriptive list at Deerfield, MA, during Revolutionary War service in July, 1780, & is described as 19 years old, 5 ft. 9 in. tall, with a light complexion & eyes, & with brown hair. The town of Bernardstone (Bernardstone's Grant, now Florida, Berkshire County, MA.), Hampshire, MA, was given credit for his service, which was for the term of three months. This would make Amasa's birth year 1761.[2]

It is said that Amasa married a Mary Carpenter, but I've been unable to find a primary source to support this assertion. However, there are two deeds from Guilford, Windham County, Vermont, one dated 1785 & the other 1788, that shows interaction with various Carpenters. The first has Amasa buying land from an Asaph Carpenter & a Caleb & Benjamin Carpenter are witnesses. (Guilford Deeds, Vol. 1, pg. 222) The other has Amasa selling to a John Bolster? 37 acres that is partially bound by Asaph & a Joseph Carpenter. Asaph & Benjamin Carpenter are witnesses. (Guilford Deeds, Vol. 2, pg. 173.) Neither of these deeds states a family relationship, but they are at least show a link to the Carpenter family.

It is stated here, & has been stated elsewhere, that Amasa died the 1st of Nov. 1827 at Guilford, VT. However, there is NO primary source to support these assertions. In fact, there is no Amasa Russell in Vermont, N.H., N.Y., or Massachusetts in the 1810 or 1820 Federal Censuses. He is present in the 1800 VT Census, Rupert, Bennington County.[3] Consider the 1827 date & location to be guesses.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Amasa by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Amasa:
