Jeffery George Mouland Russell was born in Swindon, Wiltshire in 1871, the youngest of three children in the Russell family and the only son. He emigrated with his family on the Hurunui, to New Zealand in 1877. "He landed at New Plymouth, and was brought up to his father's trade. Mr Russell subsequently removed to Greymouth, and while on the West Coast had some experience in hydraulic sluicing. During his residence in Greymouth, in conjunction with his father, he erected the Roman Catholic church in that town." (Cyclopedia of New Zealand) [2].
Jeffery George Mouland Russell was the junior partner of Russell and Son (established in 1892), a New Plymouth form specialising in building construction and monumental masonry. Russell & Son were involved in the construction of a number of buildings in and around New Plymouth. He was married in August 1894 to Emmalena Ward, the daughter of prominent New Plymouth businessman Joseph Ward and Thirza Moon.
Russell & Son erected the famous Te Whiti memorial at Parihaka Pa. Jeffrey was also involved in the building of the Cenotaph in Queen Street, New Plymouth. 'This was designed by a New Plymouth architect F. Messenger, built in grey stone cut from the Mangorie quarry, by J.G.M. Russell, J. McCracken and A. Handley ... The 11 metre monument was unveiled on September 24, 1924, by the Governor General Viscount Jellicoe.' Jeffery's father passed away a week later.
He marries Emmalena Ward in 1894 in New Zealand and they have 8 children: 5 sons and 3 daughters [3].
He passed away in 1948 in New Zealand and is buried in the Te Henui Cemetery, New Plymouth [4].
