Mathias Rust was named on the 1798 Tax List of Rockingham County, Virginia. Nothing is known concerning Mathias and his family between 1798 and 1816, when Mathias Rust and Frederick Michael are recorded as arriving in Clark County, Ohio.

Mathias and Mary settled about 1816 in Clark County, Ohio. His brother, Abraham Rust, married Mary's sister, Elizabeth Coffelt, and they also settled in Clark County, Ohio. Other siblings included Catharine, Barbara, Jacob, John, Valentine and Philip, who were all mentioned in brother Abraham's will.

Here at the time of the 1820 U. S. Federal Census, Mathias and Mary, his wife, are enumerated as residing in Green Township of Clark County, Ohio with six sons and no daughters.

By the 1830 Census, the family has relocated into German Township, Clark County, Ohio. Residing with them are three sons and one daughter.

Mathias wrote his will 25 May 1834 naming his children: Catharine, Abraham, Mathias, Jacob, John, William and Barbara. He also names his wife Mary.

He died 18 June 1836 at 69 years 4 months. He was buried at the Lawrenceville Cemetery, Clark County, Ohio.

His will was probated on 1 August 1836 by his son, Abraham, the executor of the estate. Abraham Rust posted his bond for administrating of estate on 1 August 1836. On 10 August 1836 the court granted Abraham executor duties to administer the estate.
