From the Journal of Accounting and Commerce, G.P.O. Imperial Supplies Department, Wellington; "The announcement of the death of Mr David Rutherford, chief accountant of the Imperial Supplies Department, which took place at Dunedin on the 6th of June, will be recieved with extreme regret by all who had the pleasure of his aquaintance. A native of Outram, Otago, born there thirty four years ago, Mr Rutherford was educated at the Public School, afterwards proceeding to the Boys' High School, Dunedin. He passed the Junior Civil Services Examination in 19??, and joined the Accountant's Branch of the G.P.O. in the same year. In 1905 he was successful in negotiating the Senior Examination, and completed the N.Z. Society Of Accountants' examination in 1912. Mr Rutherford's promotion in the Post and Telegraph Department was rapid, and at the time he was specially selected to take charge of the accounts of the Imperial Supplies Department [where] he had reached the position of assistant accounts clerk, head office. The brilliant work performed by Mr Rutherford during the war period held out hopes to his many friends that he was destined to go far in the Public Service, but a rapid illness, which ended fatally, dashed those hopes to the ground. Of an amiable and happy disposition, the deceased was a great favourite with his fellow officials, and his business capacity earned the respect of all with whom he came in contact. To his widow and family we extend our sincerest sympathy in their sad bereavement."
