Biography

ADAM of Ladfield, merchant, Bailie of Jedburgh 1676-84 and Treasurer, Cockburn-Hood said was served heir 1691 in Ladfield, Dolphinston and Bearhope (no entry in RSH) which last he gave to his brother.

He was alive in 1715 when his heir was 'younger' but d. before July 22, 1722.

Children: by Adam's first marriage Jed. Feb. 16, 1674/5 to Agnes Jameson.

Children: by Adam's second marriage Edin. June 3, 1684 to Janet dau. of David Lindsay, merchant and bailie of Edin., and widow of James Lothian (Loudon), apothecary. ^{[1] [2]}

b. JOHN of Ladfield, bap. Jed. Feb. 25, 1687/8.^[3][4] HCh said was served heir to his father Oct. 11, 1723 (not in RSH) . At Cavers Nov. 26, 1712 as younger of Ladfield he m. Margaret eldest dau. and coheir of William Rutherford of Falla (Jed. Reg.).

Reference Notes

Might the two daughters named above--Alison and Alice--be the same person? OPR Birth/Baptism entries are found on Scotland's People (26 Jan 2020) for Alieson, John and Jean naming Jonet Lindsey as their mother, but a similar one is not found for an "Alice."

Additional documentation is needed to confirm that the "Janet" named above is indeed a daughter of "our" Adam and Jonet. Her mother is not named in the cited marriage record, and there is an OPR record that gives the birth date of a "Jonatt Rutherfurd" as 11 Jan 1685. That birth date suggests that Jonet Lindsay was not the mother of Jonatt, given that daughter Alieson was baptized on 19 Apr 1865. ^[9]
