Biography

I began genealogical research in 1998. At first I just explored both my mother's and father's family trees. Once I got into this research my direction began to change to include convict research and military research. After being stuck for sometime with my Rutherford family in 2014/5 I decided to go down the autosomal and Y-DNA testing path to try and discover where my Rutherford's ultimately come from and to hopefully locate living relatives.

DNA Research

Since beginning DNA research I have been on an interesting path, I have now begun a project on FTDNA for a small but growing group of men that are genetically related to my male Rutherford line. I have also discovered that there seems to be two main groups of male genetic Rutherford's with both claiming/believing to come from Rutherford in Scotland and further back to Normans - this can not be true. I believe (based on the Y-DNA results[1], though considering how many people have the surname Rutherford this is a small amount of results) that one group of Rutherford's are Normans and these sit on the R-P312 side of the R1b haplotree, and the genetic group my male Rutherford's belong to are Anglo-Saxon and we sit on the R-U106 side of the R1b haplotree.

DNA Testing

My father has undertaken on FTDNA - Family Finder, STR testing and Big-Y testing.

Thanks to SNP Y-DNA testing I have discovered that our Rutherford line is a part of a group that do not descend from the Flemish (which is a view held by many - that all Rutherford's descend from Flemish origins). The group of Rutherford's I belong with/to have Anglo-Saxon ancestry.

If anyone is interested in Rutherford Y-DNA research please take a look at:

  1. The Rutherford project on FTDNA
  2. The Scottish-English Marches project on FTDNA

Websites

I have been slowly placing my military researching and Y-DNA research onto my own websites that I created and run:

Hi, Brian

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Welcome to WikiTree and DNA.

My name is John Kingman. I am a Coordinator with the WikiTree DNA Project.

Since you have started following a DNA tag, you may be interested in how you can use DNA test matches with your relatives to strengthen your genealogy on WikiTree. You will find the answers in the Help pages, of which the DNA Help category page shows all the DNA help that is available, and the How to Get Started with DNA page is highlighted. Also the DNA Features page can show you various ways that DNA tests can work with your genealogy.

You may see some relatives show up in your list of "DNA Connections" on your profile if they have added a DNA test to their profile. These DNA Connections are possible DNA test matches, they are not sufficient for marking parental relationships as "confirmed with DNA" without providing a DNA Confirmation source citation providing details of an acceptable DNA match. You may find that you have acceptable matches with some of them. There is more information about DNA Connections on the DNA Test Connections page.

When you are ready to start documenting that your genealogy sources are confirmed by DNA test matches, be sure to follow the guidance at the Confirmed with DNA help page. Also, I strongly recommend using the DNA Confirmation Citation Maker, for creating and/or validating your DNA confirmation source citations. Note that a profile should not be marked "confirmed with DNA" without source citations for both genealogy and relevant DNA test matches.

If you have questions or need assistance, feel free to ask on the G2G Forum using the Tag "DNA" and/or "DNA_Confirmation".

Happy WikiTree-ing!

John Kingman

Looks like you got your email address confirmed. You can now add comments to profiles and use the G2G forum collaborate with other members.

You'll only need to complete the volunteer process if you would like to edit or create profiles. for the ancestors you have discovered. Let me know and a Greeter will get you confirmed.

Thanks,

Hello!

The confirmation for WikiTree Guest access comes to you as an email, so you need to check your inbox and spam folder. If you cannot find the email, a new confirmation email can be generated at E-mail confirmation problems. This is all a process for the WikiTree server to become acquainted with your email server and vice versa so the computers can route the emails properly, so this process is primarily done by the machines with a little help from you. Please let me know if you have any questions about this or anything about WikiTree.  :-)

Cindy ~ WikiTree Greeter

PS If links do not work in an email from WikiTree, try them from the comment section of your profile page.

This is just a note to say hello and to let you know that I'm available to answer questions about joining WikiTree.

To contact me, click the link to my name above, then send a private message or post a comment on my profile page.

Gilly ~ WikiTree Greeter.
