One of the Rutledge ancestors (but apparently not a direct ancestor), Edward Rutledge, was at 27, the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. 1

Alexander, his wife, and their first four children, Ann, Alexander, Edward, and six-month-old Susan departed Ireland in 1804. The ship's passenger list states: "List of passengers to New York on the ship "Charles and Harriott," sworn at Sligo, 29 March 1804" Alex Rutledge - Tyrecough - Labourer. 1

Sligo is a port on the West coast of Ireland, in County Leitrim, near Fermanagh where Edward said he was born. 1

Alexander Rutledge, Sr. was an officer in the King's Army, married Anne MacDonald, daughter of Scotch Earl Edward MacDonald and his wife, a sister of the Duchess of York in 1794. In 1800 Alexander was sent to Ireland as commander of a company of soldiers and took his wife and three children, including son, Alexander, Jr. born in 1798. 1

The family immagrated to the U. S. in 1804 locating in Sullivan County, NY. Alexander, Sr. purchased some 1,000 acres of timerbland including the present site of Callicoon. Alexander had a brother Edward who had reportedly assisted in framing the Constitution of the U.S. and was a signer of the same. Another brother, John, was a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
