Biography

Birth and Childhood

Eliza Emily Rutledge

Eliza Emily Rutledge was born at Sydney, Colony of New South Wales, Australia in 1842,^[1][2][3] second daughter to William Rutledge and Eliza (nee Kirk).

Within a year of her birth, her father purchased land at what is now Tower Hill, Victoria, Australia, helping to establish the township of Belfast, District of Port Phillip, Colony of New South Wales, Australia, at the start of what is locally referred to as the Shipwreck Coast. So Eliza grew up at Farnham Park, west of Warrnambool, Colony of Victoria, Australia, in a landed gentry family class.^[4]

This was the Farnham Park Gatehouse, which was the entry point through the Farnham Estate. Eliza would have passed by here often. A police officer was supposed to have resided here, and after he died, it has been said that he now haunts this house, and will put his hand on peoples shoulders, as if trying to accost someone.^[7]

Marriage and Children

Eliza married Hickman Molesworth, Esq, and Barrister-at-Law^[9] (whose father was Justice Molesworth^[10] of the Surpreme Court Melbourne.), at Christ Church Warrnambool in 1868.^{[11][12][13][14]}

Her parents had donated at least three of the stained glass windows to the church.^[15][16][17]

Molesworth Children.

Hickman and Eliza had four children, and seem to have lived back and forth between Hawthorn, Colony of Victoria and Port Fairy, Colony of Victoria:

1. Enid Josephine 1869-1953,
2. Robert Arthur 1870-1917,
3. Emily Maude 1871-1957, &
4. William Farnham 1873-1923.

Death and Heritage

She died at Edlington estate, Hawthorn, at a young 38 years, in 1881,^[19][20][21]

and was buried at Kew Cemetery.^[22][23] Eliza was initially buried in a different plot at Kew Cemetery, but was transferred to the current position, to be with Judge Robert, and later her husband Hickman and two daughters.

Eliza's Last Will and Testament^[24] was made out in the presence of her husband and his father, and her possessions willed to Hickman. She was apparently receiving an income from her father's deceased estate, which was used for the care of her children.

When Eliza passed, she left four children, from the age of twelve down to eight, four children who would have been devastated, and quite likely had their lives affected. It would be nice to find out what caused her passing.

Of her four children, only one carried the bloodline to another generation. Her daughters, although quite successful, never married. Her eldest son married, but died months later without heir. William who gave Eliza five grandchildren, was not married when he had them. Each of the five grandchildren however married and had children, producing sixteen great grandchildren from 1934 to 1963, 56 g.g. grandchildren from 1956 to 1993, and g.g.g. grandchildren from 1976, and g.g.g.g. grandchildren from 2003.^[26] Although she missed seeing future generations, she left something we could look back to, and be thankful.

In more recent days, the legendary Mahogany Ship was located on the beach portion of their property, along the shipwreck coast.
