Biography

James was born about 1859, at Seaton Sluice, Northumberland, England.

James Rutledge married Isabella Jordan, on 10 April, 1884, at Morpeth, Northumberland, England^[1].

Isabella and James had at least 4 children:

• Thomas Basil (Rutledge-3321), baptized 24 February, 1888;
• Sarah Ellen (Rutledge-3323), born ca. December, 1889;
• James Herbert (Rutledge-3547), born 4 November, 1891; and
• Crawford Jordan (Rutledge-3548), born ca. December, 1894.

At the time of the 1891 Census, Isabella, 31, and James Rutledge, 32, Blacksmith, were living at Fourth Street, Gateshead, Durham, with their daughter Sarah E., 1^[2].

The 1901 Census recorded Isabella, 41, and Jas Rutledge, 43, Blacksmith, living on Brinkburn Avenue, Gateshead, Durham, England, with children Sarah E., 11, James H., 9, and Crawford G., 6, and boarder Albert S. Rutledge, 16, Apprentice (Electrical Engineer)^[3].

At the time of the 1911 Census, Isabella, 51, and James, 53, Blacksmith (N.E. Railway), were still living at Gateshead, Durham, with their children Sarah Ellen, 21, School Teacher, Crawford Gordon, 16, Junior Clerk, and James Herbert, 19, Student at College^[4].

James Rutledge probably died sometime before Wife Isabella died, in October, 1930, as Isabella left her estate to son James and sister Ellen. Had James survived her, she would have left it to him.

The age is correct in the first one, and the location is more likely in the second and 3rd, but the ages are wrong. More research is needed to determine if any of these is our James.
