Biography

Thomas was born on the farm of his father, Thomas, known as Salisbury Plains. This farm was located near where Druid Hill Park stands in the city of Baltimore today. His birth is recorded in the parish register of St. Paul's church in Baltimore.^[1]

Marriage & Family

Thomas was married twice during his long lifetime. His first wife was Mary Hanson, the daughter of Jonathan Hanson and Sarah Spicer. Mary was the mother of three known children:

Jonathan Rutter b. abt. 1757

John Rutter b. abt. 1759

Mary Rutter b. abt. 1761

The second wife of Thomas was Sarah Spicer. Sarah was the mother of at least three children:

Thomas Jr. b. 1763

George b. 1781

Valentine b. 1777

All of these children were buried in the Rutter family graveyard and were moved to the family vault located in Greenmount Cemetery in the 1850s.^[2]

Thomas Rutter operated a mill located on the Jones Falls for many years. He was also a captain in the Baltimore County Militia from 1775-76 during the American Revolution. ^[3] When the mill was advertised for sale in 1800, it was advertised as Old Major Rutter's Mill.^[4] Thomas died without writing a will and no probate records for him have been found. .
