Biography

When Mary Rutter was born on January 18, 1784, her father, George, was 33, and her mother, Jane, was 22. She married Martin Morrison on May 14, 1805. They had nine children in 21 years:

  • Matthew Morrison, 1805–1881
  • Margaret Morrison, 1807–1855
  • George R. Morrison, 1809–1870
  • Thomas Morrison, 1814–1886
  • Andrew Fisher Morrison, 1817–1867
  • Martin Morrison, 1820–1830
  • William Henry Morrison, 1822–1891[1]
  • Joseph A. (Adelbert??) Morrison, 1823–1910
  • Eleanor (Ellen) Morrison, 1826–1870

She died in/about 1876 at the impressive age of 92.

Note from Ancestry.com user, ellen morrison, Sept, 2017:
To date, I have not been able to confirm Mary's place/year of death. After Martin's death in 1852, Mary lived in the household of her youngest daughter, Eleanor, until Eleanor died abt. 1866. My theory is that Mary may have lived with her grand-daughter, also Mary, following Eleanor's death and traveled back and forth between New York and Canada (her husband being a Canadian by birth) until her death. Eleanor's husband (George Boswell) eventually (1904) died in a Poor House and I suspect that Mary Rutter Morrison may have experienced the same fate in Niagara County, NY. By 1876, most of Mary/Martin's children had moved out of NY....she was probably left to be cared for by a transitory grand-daughter, who had no resources to care for her.....return her to Cape Vincent for burial with Martin..or a proper burial at all. IF Mary died in a Niagara County "Poor House", she is likely in an unmarked cemetery.
