Wilhelm Johann Friederich Rütz was born on 27 August 1861. [1] His parents were Johann Christian Friedrich Rütz and Johanna Maria Friederike Woderich. [1] He was baptized on 8 September 1861 in Alt Käbelich, Mecklenburg, Germany. [1]

He and his family departed from Hamburg, Germany for the United States on 26 October 1872 on the ship Germania. [2] They arrived in New York on 13 November 1872. [3]

He appeared in the 1880 US Census in Green Garden, Will County, Illinois. [4] He was living with his mother Johanna, his stepfather Henry Quitmeier, his stepbrother William Quitmeier, his siblings Louise and August, and a farm laborer William Meisterling. [4] He was working on a farm. [4]

He married Wilhelmine Knoop on 24 March 1887 in Peotone Township, Will County, Illinois. [5] They had the following children:
