August John Ruetz was born on 6 April 1873 in Green Garden, Will County, Illinois. ^{[1] [2] [3]} His parents were John Henry Ritz and Johannah Brodewick. ^[1]

He appeared in the 1880 US Census in Green Garden, Will County, Illinois. ^[4] He was living with his mother Johanna, his stepfather Henry Quitmeier, his stepbrother William Quitmeier, his siblings William and Louise, and a farm laborer William Meisterling. ^[4]

He married Fannie Curl on 2 June 1912 in Manteno, Kankakee County, Illinois. ^[1] They had the following children:
