James Ryan died 19 Apr 1887


"Civil War Soldier. Member of Company I of the 63rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His company was known as "The McKeesport Rifle Grays." Mustered in on August 19, 1861, commissioned as Captain, and commander of the company. He was wounded at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run in August of 1862. He temporarily took command of the entire regiment during the Battle of Chancellorsville in May of 1863. Led Company I at the Battle of Gettysburg. His name is inscribed on the plaque of the 63rd Pennsylvania Regiment on the Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg. Promoted to Major on December 19, 1863. Discharged on April 1, 1864." [4] [5]
