Ruth was born in 1715 in Loudoun, VA, USA.^[1][2] She was the daughter of John Ryan and Mary (Cobbey) Ryan.^[3]

When Ruth was about 33 she married William Hanks in 1749 in Anne Arundel, MD, UDA. The couple had one child: Margaret Hanks.^[3][4]
