Biography

Bethena Frances Ryan was born about 1895 in Missouri. She is the daughter of William Ryan and Amanda Duren.

The 1900 U.S. Census for Pleasant Valley Township, Mansfield City Ward 1-2, Wright, Missouri, finds William Ryan as the 32-year-old head of household. It is noted that he was born in Kentucky, he is white and married with eleven living children. The following are also listed: Amanda Ryan, wife, 31 yrs; Lizzie Ryan, daughter, 16 yrs; Sarah S. Ryan, daughter, 12 yrs; Ella Ryan, daughter, 10 yrs; Bethena F. Ryan, daughter, 6 yrs; Garley A. Ryan, son, 5 yrs; Thomas V. Ryan, son, 1 yr. All the children are listed as having been born in Missouri.

The 1910 U.S. Census for Ash Grove, Greene, Missouri, records that William M. Ryan, age 48, was the head of household. He was white, married, and born in Kentucky. His wife Amanda Ryan, was 39, born in Missouri. The children are listed as follows: Lizzie Ryan, daughter, 21 years; Sarah Ryan, daughter, age 20 years; Ella E. Ryan, daughter, age 18 years; Beth Ryan, daughter, age 14 years; Carly Ryan, son, age 12 years; Connie Ryan, daughter, 10 years; Frank Ryan, son, 8 years; Clara Ryan, daughter, 6 years; William D. Ryan, son, 4 years; Luceil, daughter, an infant. All the children were born in Missouri with the exception of Clara; she was born in Louisiana. (Note: Connie Frances Ryan is male, not female.)

Beth married James Blaine Rasmussen in California on July 6, 1915.

The 1920 U.S. Census for Township 3, Fresno, California, finds the following family: James B. Rasmussen, head, age 26, born in CA; Beth Rasmussen, wife, age 23, born in CO; Dorothy Rasmussen, daughter, age 3, born in CA; Delbert Rasmussen, son, age 1, born in CA. Note: Later census data indicates that Delbert was her stepson; it appears Beth and James Rasmussen had no children.

The 1930 U.S. Census for Sonora, Tuolumne, California, finds the following family: James B. Rasmussen, head, age 37, born in California; Beth Rasmussen, wife, age 35, born in CO; Dorothy Rasmussen, daughter, age 14, born in CA; Delbert Rasmussen, son, age 12, born in CA.

At some point after 1930, Beth and James split up. Beth married Harry Ira Patterson before 1940; James died in 1941.

The 1940 U.S. Census for Madera, Madera, California, finds the following family: Harry I. Patterson, head, age 39, born in CA; Beth E. Patterson, wife, age 44, born in MO; Delbert R. Rasmussen, step-son, age 22, born in CA; Florence R. Rasmussen, step-daughter-in-law, age 24, born in CA; Muriel B. Rasmussen, an infant, step-granddaughter, born in CA.

Bethena Frances Ryan Rasmussen Patterson died on November 8, 1997, in Fresno, California. She is buried in Fresno Memorial Gardens with her second husband, Harry Ira Patterson.
