John William Ryker was born 16 May 1840 [1] [2] [3] [4] in Jefferson County, Indiana [5] to Abraham Smock Ryker (b 23 Oct 1804 in Shelby County) [5] and Mary Merrill Smith (b 22 Nov 1799 in Shelby County, Kentucky; d. 1887). [citation needed]

John William Ryker served in Co I, 18th Indiana during the United States Civil War. [6]

John William Ryker married Emma Judith Wheat (b 1842 in Indiana) [3] [7] on 7 Jan 1868 in Franklin, Indiana. [citation needed]
When his wife Emma Judith (Wheat) Ryker died to typhoid on 12 August 1887, she was survived by 8 children. [7]

John W. Ryker, age 58 years, a well-known and respected citizen of Franklin, died Friday morning at 11 o’clock at his home in west Franklin. He was an old soldier and a member of Wadsworth Post G.A.R. For a long time he had been in failing health, which terminated in lung trouble. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, from the residence conducted by Rev. L. P. Marshall, assisted by Dr. W. T. Stott. The pall bearers were members of Co. I, 18th Ind, to which deceased belonged. They were Edward Ditmars, D. D. Waldron, Henry Goodman, Henry Bogart, John Tilson and L. W. Knobe. Burial at Hopewell. [cc]

Chester Arthur Ryker married Lydia Deborah Denny on 21 Feb 1907 in Marion County, Indiana. He was the son of John W. Ryker and Emma Wheat. She was the daughter of Samuel Denny and Jenny Rowe. [13]
