Catherine was born in Ohio in September 1840.[1] She was the daughter of Samuel Ryman and Catherine Neff. She passed away in 1912. [2]
She married Harrison Shull, a farmer who also was a lay minister. The family moved from farm to farm in south-central Ohio. She and her husband had relatively little formal education, but they encouraged intellectual activity among their children. Catharine had a strong interest in serious reading, especially topics relating to natural history. [3]
