Hi Denise,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are usually shared by many descendants, collaborating with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or topic. Review the project pages to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Can't find what you're looking for? Let me know, and I can make some suggestions! :-)

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

You are now a Family Member, Denise -- your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together!

Start with the New Member How-To pages — they are really useful as you add profiles and learn your way around.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To get the best results, begin adding sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to ancestors already in WikiTree. If you have exhausted what you know on one line, it can sometimes help to add what you know on another line. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

If you have any questions, use the reply link below to let me know -- I am happy to help! If I can't answer, I will help you find someone who can.

PS Click the green tags near the top of your profile and see others following the same surnames you are researching. The more of these clickable tags you add (20 max.) that include surnames, locations, periods of history or other genealogical interests, the more connections you will make and maybe find a few cousins! To edit or add more tags, click on the word “following” or use this link. This page will help you learn more about tags.

Thank you but your surnames don't connect with my mostly German ones and the rest are Irish and Scottish. But I am going to have to take you up on your offer of help.

I am trying to add my mother and I saw on your tree it says private mother, so I assume you used first name "private", surname "mother". But I searched for private mother and only one came up is that because you privatized it? I looked at the Anonymization page and that did not work, using anonymous for both first and middle names. It says to clear out all date and location fields. I clicked the radio buttons, 1) blank for extra privacy for birth and 2) blank because living for death and got a pink error box wanting a date. I tried 1930s-unknown like I saw on your tree and that was also rejected.

Starting to crawl, can't wait till I can stand.....becuase that means I'll soon be walking in WT. Thanks, Denise

Hi Denise,

You need to click on the tags you created. They are on the top of your profile.

To add family members, go to the Family Tree tab on your profile or use this link:

When you add your parents, you put in their correct names then choose the privacy settings for their profiles. If you choose private, their names will display as Private Mother or Private Father. More info on privacy can be found in the Privacy Help pages. Start here:

There's lots to learn! Take you time and I am sure you will be up to speed very soon.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
