Biography

Joseph Georg Friedrich Ernst Karl, was born on 27 August 1789 at Hildburghausen, the second, but eldest surviving son of Friedrich, Duke (Herzog) von Sachsen-Hildburghausen (Saxe-Hildburghausen) and his wife, Charlotte. Duchess von Mecklenburg-Strelitz.[1] He was Hereditary Prince (Erbprinz) von Sachsen-HIldburghausen from birth, and served in the Prussian army during the Napoleonic wars.[2]

After the death of Friedrich IV, the last Duke von Sachsen-Gotha und Altenburg, his territories were divided and Joseph's father Friedrich, renounced the Duchy of Hildburghausen and received the Principality of Altenburg instead; becoming Duke von Sachsen-Altenburg on 12 November 1826.[3] Joseph then became Hereditary Prince von Sachsen-Altenburg.

He was appointed co-ruler in 1830 and then succeeded on the death of his father as Duke on 29 September 1834.[4] Although he had introduced a constitution in 1831 and made a number of other changes to the legal and criminal codes, Altenburg was still caught up in the revolutions of 1848 and this, together with the death of his wife, forced him to abdicate in favour of his brother Georg, on 30 November 1848.[5]

He had married on 24 April 1817 at Kirchheim unter Teck, Amalie, Duchess von Württemberg, daughter of Ludwig, Duke von Württemberg and his second wife

They had six daughters; all titled Princess of Saxe-Altenburg (Prinzessin von Sachsen-Altenburg), after 1826;

  1. Alexandrine Marie Wilhelmine Katharine Charlotte Therese Henriette Friederike Georgine, born 14 April 1818 at Hildburghausen, who married 18 February 1843 at Hannover, Georg V, König (King) von Hannover;
  2. Pauline Friederike Henriette Auguste, born 24 November 1819 at Kirchheim unter Teck, and died as a child at Hildburghausen on 11 January 1825;
  3. Henriette Friederike Therese Elisabeth, born 9 October 1823 at Hildburghause, died at Altenburg 3 April 1915;
  4. Elisabeth Pauline Alexandrine, born 26 March 1826 at Hildburghausen, and married at Altenburg 10 February 1852, Peter II, Grand Duke of Oldenburg;
  5. Alexandra Friederike Henriette Pauline Marianne Elisabeth, born 8 July 1830 at Altenburg, married at St Petersburg, 30 August / 11 September 1848 (changing her name to Alexandra Iosifovna), Konstantin Nikolayevich Romanov, Grand Duke of Russia;
  6. Luise, born 4 June 1832 at Altenburg, died young 29 August 1833 at Hummelshain.[6]

As mentioned above his wife died aged 49 on 28 November 1848 at Altenburg. Joseph survived her by almost 20 years and died on 25 November 1868 also at Altenburg.[7]
