Dr. Sacks was a noted neurologist and author. Although of English birth, he spent the majority of his career in the United States. Among his most well-known works was the story of Awakenings which later became a documentary and served as the basis for the feature film of the same name which was nominated for an Academy Award and starred the great Robin Williams and Robert De Niro.

His parents were both in the medical profession as well. His father, Samuel Sacks, was a physician, and his mother, Muriel Elsie Landau Sacks, was one of the first female surgeons in the UK.

Had a brother, Marcus, who may also have been a doctor[1]
