Biography

George Sage was born on September 30, 1854 to Jesse Sage and Mary Ann Dando on board the barque, Princess Royal, while in a storm rounding Cape Horn off Patagonia, South America in a storm. As he was born "at Sea" he was never considered a "native son" of Nanaimo.

The miners from Fort Rupert (near Port Hardy today) had been moved to Nanaimo with the discovery of coal and they were put to work building houses and other buildings for the emigrants arrival.

The Princess Royal stopped in the Hawaiian Islands before landing in Esquimalt Harbour in Victoria. The family and other passengers were ferried from the ship by two smaller vessels, the Beaver and the Recovery, to Nanaimo, arriving there on November 27th, 1854 at 11 a.m. The number of people who called this home was now 100, including the children.

George Sage married Mary Ann Stubbins (Stubbings), daughter of Robert Stubbins on February 14, 1874 in Nanaimo.

There are no census' available for British Columbia until 1881. Very limited housing was available and many of the passengers lived together until more housing was completed.
