Biography

Mary Salazar Bernal

June 12, 2015

Mary Salazar Bernal passed away in her home on June 12, 2015 two weeks shy of her 95th birthday. She was born in Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, on June 25, 1920.

She grew up in a large family of seven sisters and three brothers. As the eldest, she helped raise, and occasionally rescue, her many siblings. She attended school in Fairbanks, Ariz., and graduated from Tombstone High School in 1939.

In 1946, she married the love of her life, Albert O. Bernal in a double wedding with her sister Carmen Salazar and Albert’s brother, Hilbert Bernal. Mary Kept herself busy raising their five sons, teaching catechism, and helping her large extended family.

After Albert retired, they moved to their ranch near Tres Alamos where Mary cared for cows, chickens, grandchildren, and other assorted animals. For many years, they hosted Easter celebrations that were enjoyed by all. She was preceded in death by her parents, Miguel and Carmen Salazar; husband, Albert O. Bernal; eldest son Albert S. Bernal, two brothers, and six sisters. She is survived by sons Fred (Judy) Bernal, George (Melonie) Bernal, Richard (Carol) Bernal, Eddie (Jody) Bernal, daughter-in-law Vickey Bernal, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; sisters Dolly (Mario) Maza, Josie Jensen; brother Johnny Salazar, many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on June 25, 2015. A viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m.. followed by Rosary at 10 and a funeral Mass at 10:30. Burial will be at the High Street Cemetery after services. A reception follows at church hall.

The Bernal family would like to thank all of her family and friends for their prayers and support. A special thank you goes out to the amazing people at TMC Hospice. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Benson Food Bank.
