Elizabeth Emma Sale was born in 1873 near Reigate, Surrey, England.[1]
She was Christened on 6th Jan 1874 in Leigh, Surrey, England. Her parents were Frank and Emma Sale.[2]
The 1881 Cenus shows her living in Leigh with her grandparents, Thomas and Diana Smith. Also in the household were William Smith (her uncle) and Frank Sale (presumably her brother).[3]
In the 1891 Cencus an "Elizabeth G Sale" is listed as a patient on Alexandra Road, Epsom, Surrey. Her occupation is listed as housemaid.[4]
On 10th May 1892 she marries Richard Henry Drake in Epsom, Surrey.[5] Richard's occupation is given as jockey and both reside at 6 Carters Cottages. On the marriage certificate, she records her name as "Emma Sale". The certificate also records the fathers' names as Richard Henry Drake (fishmonger) and Frank Sale (carpenter).
In 1901 Richard and Emma are living in Gwymne Terrace, Exning Road, Newmarket. The couple have two sons, Richard and George, and a daughter, Maggie. Richard’s occupation is recorded as Groom. [6]
The 1911 census lists Emma as a widow. She lives in Woodditton, Newmarket, Cambridgeshire. The following children are living with her: Richard (14), Maggie (12), George (10), Violet (5), Willie (3) and Alice (1).[7]
