Biography

Charity Lynn Saling was born in the Province of South Carolina in the early 1700s to parents Thomas and Carolyn (Stover) Saling. [1, 4, 5]

She was married to George Foreman of Edgecomb County, Province of South Carolina. [5]

According to "Foreman Family Across the South 1740-1840," "George and Charity Foreman appear to have reached the southern portion of Carolina territory that eventually became South Carolina. In the search for records, please note that a survey of the boundary between the two, begun in 1735, was not completed until 1815. This may result in information on the family being found in either North or South Carolina during this period of time.

"George and Charity Foreman lived in Edgefield District, South Carolina during this time and his last will and testament shows he also participated in farming as did many others in the region. Green-seed cotton was a staple in the area and it was grown increasingly in the interior, and the cotton gin, greater European demand, and improved transportation (the canal system and river improvements began in 1795) made it a viable economic staple. Its success turned many Piedmont farmers into slave-holding planters. Given the comments in the will of George it appears that he, too, lived on a plantation and many of his children were apparently involved in farming as well." [4]

George Foreman's last will and testament of 20 May 1786 includes the following bequeath: “I give to my beloved wife Charity Foreman the plantation and land whereon I now live, with two negros, Patt and Joe during her natural life. I also give unto Charity one feather bed and furniture and an equal part with my children that are now living." [1]

Her husband's will also names the children living at that time as Isaac, Verly, Olive, Zilpah, Mary, Sarah, Martha, Judah, and Nancy. [1]

The 1790 Census names Charity Foreman as head of her own household in Edgefield, South Carolina, consisting of three white females and four slaves. The household presumably includes daughters Mary and Martha, who never married. [2] That same 1790 census lists Isaac Foreman as an adjacent and separate head-of-household neighbor, who holds five slaves. [2]

According to the 1800 US Federal Census, Charity is still listed as the head of her own household, and still in Edgefield, South Carolina, with the following information: [3]

  • Free White Persons - Males - Under 10: 1
  • Free White Persons - Females - Under 10: 1
  • Free White Persons - Females - 26 thru 44: 1
  • Free White Persons - Females - 45 and over: 1
  • Number of Slaves: 6
  • Number of Household Members Under 16: 2
  • Number of Household Members Over 25: 2
  • Number of Household Members: 10

She passed away after 1800.
