Biography

Hezekiah was born in 1789 in Rhode Island. He was the son of John Salisbury and Freelove Herendeen. He was named for his maternal grandfather, Hezekiah Herendeen.[1]

He may also have been known as Hez.

In 1810 he was living with his father in Canandaigua, Ontario, New York, United States.

According to History of the Press in Western New York:[2]

"...Smith H. and Hezekiah A. Salisbury were the first to break ground in the attempt to establish the Press in Erie County. This was in 1811, when this section of the State was just emerging from a wilderness state. ... After struggling against the adverse fortunes that usually attend the early establishment of the Newspaper Press in an untried field, one of the brothers, Smith H., has silently sunk to his final rest. The other, Hezekiah A., still lives to witness the complete triumph of the art in the very place, where 36 years ago, the effort must have been looked upon as little short of the dreaming of a disordered mind! ..."

H. A. Salisbury and Phebe Osborn were married 06 Nov 1829 in Clarence, New Jersey, United States.[3]

In 1840 in Buffalo, New York[4] his household included 1 male under age 5, 1 male age 5 to 9, 1 male age 50 to 59, 1 female under age 5, 1 female age 5 to 9, 1 female age 10 to 14, 1 female age 20 to 29, 1 female age 30 to 39, 1 female age 40 to 49 and 1 female age 70 to 79.

Research Notes

From his grave memorial: On September 25, 1815 he married Betsy Osborne of Erie (now Akron), NY. She died in 1827. Hezekiah married her sister Phoebe Osborne in 1829.

The gravestone from his other grave memorial includes: Phebe Osborne his wife 1799-1879, Phebe Vail Salisbury 1834-1906, Marietta Salisbury 1838-1917. It appears that Phebe and Marietta were daughters.
