James was born 10 Apr 1833 in Madison, St. Francis, Arkansas, USA[1] the son of Arenius Sallee and Martha (Green) Sallee. As a young man living at home in Ozark, Missouri he was described as a laborer.[2]
James was married first to Emily Marritt 25 Aug 1859 in Ozark, Missouri.[3] The couple first appeared childless in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census enumerated 23 June 1860 in Ozark, Missouri.[4] However, there was one child recorded from this marriage; John W Sallee who was born 19 Aug 1861.[5]
Shortly thereafter on 1 Sep 1861 James was enlisted as a Sergeant in the Union Army; Company: F; Regiment: Phelps' Infantry, engaging in the Civil War. On 31 Jul 1864 he was promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned to Company: B of the 16th Missouri Cavalry. He mustered out of the military 1 Jul 1865 in Springfield, Missouri.[6]
James' second marriage was to Emarine Martin (Emarine misnamed Emiline) 11 Aug 1867 in Ozark, Missouri.[7] She is found afterward in the U.S. Federal Census enumerated on 19 August 1870 along with John W Sallee (from his first marriage) and the first two of his other children.[8] By 1880 the number had grown to six.[9] His last child was born by 1883.
In 1910 James and Emarine were living with their daughter Emily's family in Marion, Ozark, Missouri.[10] James passed away 14 Apr 1916 and is buried in the Igo-Sallee Cemetery; Pondfork, Ozark County, Missouri.[11]
Research Notes:
James H Sallee's father had his given name, aside from that which is provided on this profile, spelled variously as: Aranaus (Find a Grave®); Arrania (Civil War Pension Index) and diminutives such as "Arana" and "Arany".
As no additional records of James' wife Emily are to be found after the birth of their son John W Sallee, it is likely that she died in childbirth.
Daughter Martha C Sallee was misidentified as "Martha Ann" in the 1880 census. The U.S., Find a Grave® profile for her cites her middle name as Catherine, but none of her verifiable records identifies her as such.
