Biography

Matilda Salmon (married name Clarke) was born on 24 March 1861 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, the daughter of Hannah (Dinsdale) Salmon and Frederick John Salmon.^[1]

She married Joseph Clarke on 8 April 1885 in Melbourne, Victoria.^[2] Their children were:^[3]

• Ritta Clarke (1890–1892)
• Ellen Ethel Clarke (1893–1985)
• Clarence Alfred Joseph Clarke (1896–1946)

• Violet Vera Dinsdale Clarke (1900–1952)

Matilda died on 4 July 1902 in Melbourne, aged 41 years.^[4][5]

Recollections of Charles Bertram Moore, recorded August 1987:

"Their sixth child, Matilda (previously mentioned) married Joe Clarke, who, for many years, owned and ran a Newsagency in the east end of puckle Street, Moonee ponds. They had seven children; the first and third child, both died before reaching 2 years. Their second child was Milly, born 8/12/1887 and died 12/10/1955, thus making her 97 years old. Olive, also her granddaughter Cheryl may have more information, if one so desires to contact them. Their fourth child was Ellen (Nelly) who also died in 1985. Their fifth and sixth were two boys, who both served overseas in the 1st A.I.F. of W.W.I. Their seventh and last child was Violet, or Vi."^[6]
