Biography

John Salmon was probably born about 1753 (based on his age at death) at Finchingfield, Essex, England. No matching baptism record has been found in the Finchingfield parish register. Many family trees show him as the son of Joseph Salmon and Sarah Beal who married in 1741 at Finchingfield and had children baptised there up to 1757.

John Salmon and Amy Brewty married on 29 November 1774 at St John the Baptist, Finchingfield, Essex.[1] They had eight children: Frances Salmon (b. 1775), Thomas Salmon (b. 1777), Sarah Salmon (b. 1780), Theodosia Salmon (b. 1783), Joseph Salmon (b. 1785), John Salmon (b. 1788), twins Rebecca Salmon & William Salmon (b. 1792).

John Salmon farmer of Finchingfield, wrote his will on 6 Aug 1822. He made bequests to his eight children and some of his grandchildren:

  • daughter Frances wife of Thomas Thorogood
  • son Thomas
  • grandchildren Joseph and Thomas Cocks[?] children of daughter Sarah Cocks[?]
  • grandchild Ann Salmon illegitimate child of daughter Theodosia Newman
  • son Joseph
  • son John
  • daughter Rebecca Turner
  • son William

He appointed his son Joseph and friend Mr Thomas Smith as executors but in a later codicil changed his executors to his son Joseph and son-in-law James Turner of Finchingfield blacksmith.[2]

John Salmon died in 1826 age 73 and was buried on 13 February 1826 at St John the Baptist, Finchingfield, Essex.[3]

Research Notes

Many Ancestry family trees show John with a birth date of 21 Jan 1757 but there is no evidence to support that date. There was a Thomas son of Joseph & Sarah Salmon baptised on 21 Jan 1757 at Finchingfield which is probably where that erroneous date originated.
