Biography

Caroline was born in 1832 in Brownsville, Jefferson County, New York.[1] She was the daughter of Nathaniel Salisbury and Rachel Goodrich.

In 1850 she was living in the town of Hastings, Oswego County, New York.[2] The household included Nathaniel Salisbury, age 56 born in Vermont, Lucy age 44 born in Vermont, and George E age 23, Caroline M age 17, Emery H age 14 and Morris F age 12, all born in New York.

In 1855 in Hastings[3] the household included Nathaniel Salsbury age 61, his wife Lucy age 49, their child Caroline Salsbury age 22 and their child Morris F Salsbury age 17. Nathanial and Lucy were born in Vermont. Caroline and Morris were born in Jefferson County, New York.

In Jun 1860 she was working as a domestic in Syracuse, New York.[4] The household included Joseph G Brower age 52, Mariah H Brower age 45, Josephine Brower age 22, Hurbert Brower age 26, and Caroline Salsbury age 25. All were born in New York.

She married Herbert Harrison Brower. They had nine children.[5]

In 1865 she was living in Syracuse, New York.[6] The household included Herbert Brower age 34, Caroline Brower age 31, Addie Brower age 7, Jessie Brower age 3, and Herbert Brower age 2.

In 1870 she was living in Syracuse; her husband was a shoe dealer.[7] The household included Herbert H Brower age 39, Caroline Brower age 37, Jessie Brower age 8, Herbert Brower age 6, Marcia Brower age 4, and William Brower age 1. All were born in New York.

In 1875 she was living in Southfield, Richmond, New York, United States.[8] The household included Herbert H Brower age 43, his wife Caroline K Brower age 41, daughter Jessie M Brower age 13, son Herbert L Brower age 11, daughter Marcia C Brower age 9, son Willie Joseph Brower age 6, daughter Catie Josephine Brower also age 6, son Walter H Brower age 4, and daughter Lulu May Brower age 2. Herbert was born in Seneca County, Caroline in Jefferson County, Jessie in Oswego County, Herbert and Marcia in Onondaga County, Willie and Catie in Richmond County, Walter in Onondaga County, and Lulu in Richmond County.

In 1880 she was living in Southfield, Richmond, New York, United States.[9] The household included Herbert H Brower age 49, his wife Caroline M Brower age 47, daughter Jessie J Brower age 18, son Herbert S Brower age 16, daughters Marcia C Brower age 14, Lulu M Brower age 8, Katie Brower age 11, son Willie Brower age 11, son Walter H Brower age 9 and daughter Maud W Brower age 4. All were born in New York.

The family moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1886.[10]

In 1892 she was living on Decatur Street in Brooklyn, New York.[11] The household included Herbert H Brower age 60, Caroline M Brower age 58, Jessie Brower age 28, Marsha Brower age 25, Katie Brower age 23, Walter Brower age 21, Lulu Brower age 19, and Maud Brower age 16.

On 2 Aug 1899 a notice was published by the Supreme Court of Onondaga County, New York on behalf of Almira Bond, administrator of the estate of Maria Bond, deceased, for the sale of land and distribution of proceeds among the named individuals.[12] Caroline M Brower was one of the named individuals.

In 1900 she was living on Decatur Street in Brooklyn, New York. She was widowed, the mother of 9 children, 8 living, her father was born in Vermont and her mother was born in New York.[13] The census was mis-indexed as Brown rather than Brower. The household included Caroline age 67, her daughters Jessie J age 34, Marcia C age 30, Kate M age 29, and Maude W age 23 and border William Ringgold age 27 born in England.

She died 2 Jun 1906 in Kings County, New York.[14] She is buried in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp, Richmond County (Staten Island), New York.[15][16]

Research Notes

Her death record identifies her parents as Nathaniel Salsbury and Rachiel Goodrich.

This cannot be the Rachel who was the wife of Ashbel Goodrich, but it is quite possible that Silas Goodrich was her uncle, and her mother was his daughter Rachel. Goodrich-3419
