Biography

Richard was born about 1669. He died in New Jersey in 1762.

Salter was member of the King's Council in East Jersey from 1749 to 1751 and again from 1752 to 1762. He served as Justice of the Supreme Court in 1754, 1761 and 1762. Salter also served as a member of The Special Court to Try Pirates in 1761. [1]

The will of Richard Saltar of Burlington County (New Jersey) was created on 11 January 1762 and proved on 17 November 1762. In the will, he provided £100 for his wife (who is not named), and all the goods that were hers before the marriage. Sons Joseph, John and Lawrence were to inherit "the plantation on which I live" and were directed to "do justice" to their sister Elizabeth Saltar and "my grandson Richard Saltar, son of my Elisha Saltar, in manner and proportion as my brother-in-law Elisha Lawrence, and my nephew, Thomas Salter, shall order." Named as executors were sons Joseph, John, and Lawrence. Inventory of the estate was recorded on 1 November 1762, with total value of £1268, 1, 10. Joseph and John Saltar were sworn as executors on 6 March 1765. They filed their account of the estate on 3 September 1768. Lands were sold in Sussex by vendue, £21, 6, 0. [1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:

Hi-I am wondering if we can add some biographical information that I found in a Colonial Dames volume. I am not sure if that is something we can source? I pulled some information (that Salter-287 was member of the King's Council, Justice of the Supreme Court, and member of special court to try pirates) from National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of New York-Colonial Dames of the State of New York, 1913 - New York (State) page 372. I don't want to step on any toes, but I think this would be a great addition to the biography. Unsure if we can use that as a source and how best to do that. [1]

Thanks! Cheryl
