Biography

from Find A Grave Birth: 1560 Huddersfield West Yorkshire, England Death: Jan. 8, 1613 Kingston upon Hull East Riding of Yorkshire, England

Samuel Saltonstall was the son and heir to Gilbert and Isabel. Samuel's father was a cloth merchant, originally from Halifax, co. Yorkshire, England. Gilbert and his forebears prospered and were able to buy much land in Hipperholme Twp.,during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Samuel was the executor of his father's will dated 9 January 1598/1599.[1][2]

After his father's death, Samuel owned Rookes Hall and Huntwicke, Winteredge Hall at Hipperholme and Rogerthorpe in Badsworth. However, by 1612, Samuel was living primarily in Hull, having sold his property in Hipperholme to John Northend, his tenant. This particular property was later called Langley Hall and lost it's connection to the Saltonstall family.

Samuel married three wives: (1) Anne Ramsden, daughter of John Ramsden,Esq., ancestor of the Baronets Ramsden of Longley, near Huddersfield. He married (2) Elizabeth, who is said to be the daughter of Thomas Ogden, but she was a widow when she married Samuel. There was a Thomas Ogden with land in Hemsworth, where Elizabeth was living when she got her marriage license to Samuel, in 1585. She was likely Thomas's widow.[3][4] He married (3) Elizabeth Armine, widow of Hugh Armine, mayor of Hull.[5]

Anne was the mother of Sir Richard of Huntwick, Knight; baptized at Halifax, England, April 4, 1586 and lord of the manor at Ledsham.

Samuel was buried at Holy Trinity Church, Hull. It is considered one of the largest Anglican parish churches in England. It dates back to about 1300. Monumental inscription: "Here resteth in peace Samuel Saltonstall, esquire, who departed this life in the faith of Christ the viij day of January anno Domini 1612". The date is old style, i.e. 1613.[6]

His will, dated 12/31/1612, was proved in York on 7/22/1613.

Saltonstall-29 and Saltonstall-100 appear to represent the same person because: The dates of death are exactly the same. The profile for Saltonstall-29 includes all 3 marriages, including Elizabeth Ogden, who is listed as the wife of Saltonstall-100. These two individuals are undoubtedly the same person
