DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Josiah by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Josiah:
I just "corrected" the parents of Josiah to conform to the Nellis-Nelles Immigrants from the Palatinate 1710 reference, but afterwards noticed that on 13 Sep 2018 Richard Hayes had previously updated the parents—to what, I can't determine. Maybe I undid a correction that Richard made and that the Nellis–Nelles books are wrong? Please advise.
On the 1840 Census, the Peter Saltsman family shows several men in their 20's (it doesn't list names), and presumably one is Josiah, as he is not listed as a separate family. By the 1850 Census Josiah and family live on their own with his occupation as "Sawyer", and several laborers live with them. The 1860 Census lists Josiah as a "Machinist", and the family has three boys and a servant (the only servant listed on the census page). The Palatine Directory of 1869-70 lists Josiah P. Saltsman as running a sawmill, cheesebox factory, and also a farmer, and the 1880 census lists him as a "Sawyer". At that point, their 25-year-old son Peter is living with them (he doesn't get married until 1883).
