Research Notes

Note that the Virginia tax records, 1850, and 1860 census all suggest November 1793 as a more accurate date birth. Barbara Chisler Salem Church historian and caretaker of cemetery records wrote in an email on July 17, 2017: "There were 88 stones destroyed or damaged in the 1970'; not once but twice; and it's possible Charles' was one of the damaged. There could have been more to the headstone as to the dates before hand and that some of the pieces of the stone were removed or are buried in the ground."

The federal government wouldn't allow individuals who were or were suspected to be southern sympathizers to register to vote. The Liberty Tribune was pro-south and it allowed this forum for the individuals to speak out about their loyalty: Quote: CHARLES SAMPLES. I was born in Russel county, Va., November 19th, 1792, moved to Kentucky, in the spring of 1815, and in the fall of 1840, moved to Missouri. I am now 78 years old, and have been a citizen of Missouri for 30 years, but not allowed a vote.
