Biography

Father Edmond B. Sampley was local census enumerator in 1880, implying a level of literacy for him. Family stories have him and a daughter (not Johney) as school teachers, and that schoolteacher daughter might be the standing woman in the Primary Image.

Stories from elders indicate that her middle name was said as "Dee BOR ah." It is likely, but not proven, that she is named for her grandmother Deborah (Browder) Sampley (1809-abt.1878).

A newspaper notice states that a young man named "Slatton" eloped with the daughter of Mr. E.B. Sampley, undoubtedly referring to Joseph Almerine "Beauregard" Slayton and Johney Deborah (Sampley), although neither are named. However, the notice of elopement suggests that the couple were warned away from marriage in Trenton (Dade County, Georgia) and into another county, yet the marriage between these two took place 22 August 1882, in Dade County, Georgia, adjacent to DeKalb County, Alabama. [1] [2]

Attached images show two couples, the one with only two people might be Beauregard and (pregnant?) Johnny, but because Beauregard had a twin brother, this is unclear. But she resembles the seated female in the family image.

Johney had four known children by "Beauregard," possibly more but doubtful. She apparently did not live into the 1900 census where the number of children born by that time were reported, and her husband had married another wife by 1898.

She presumably died before the 1898 marriage of Joseph Almerine "Beauregard" Slayton to Lizzie Jones, but death date and burial are still being researched.

Research Notes

Note that a 16-year-old Deborah Sampley (abt 1854) is enumerated with a 60-year-old Deborah Sampley in an 1870 census for DeKalb County, Alabama, the older woman surmised to be Deborah Browder. [3] and the younger Deborah is certainly not the woman at this profile, who was reported as a 6-year-old in her father's household.[4] and 16 in 1880. [5]

Sampley-27 and Sampley-6 appear to represent the same person because: Sampley-6 appears to be a place holder. I propose that the more detailed profile I inadvertently created be merged to make one detailed profile. Johney is my great grandmother. Tanks for any attention given to this.
