Biography

Birth

Peter was born about 1850 in Minnesota Territory. (1900 census) His parentage is obscure, but he was said to be half Menominee. He himself said that he was the son of Madiahekaw, which is for Mątā‘ehiga, "He Makes the Earth Burn." (Waggoner, 13) This would imply that his mother was Menominee.

Name and Clan

His Hocąk name, given in the 1898 census as Char-stun-kaw, is a highly corrupted form of Cāšją́ga, "Wave" (Waggoner, 44), which is from cāšją́, "wave" (cf. ją, "to twist"); and -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names. This is obviously a named found in the Waterspirit Clan, but both the Bear and Wolf Clans have myths in which their progenitors traversed the Ocean Sea and generated waves. His daughter Josephine had the name, Hąheoracewįga, "Travels at Night", a Bear Clan name. However, his next daughter was given the name Kikárasįcka, "Shaking to Clear Itself" (as a dog coming out of water), a Wolf Clan personal name. The Wolf and Bear Clans were friendship clans, and might give one another names, which complicates the situation. The name of his first daughter, Louisa Inekimąnįwįga, "(She) Walks Alone", however, is more appropriate to a bear than a wolf. So it seems likely that he was a member of the Bear Clan, but in any case he was certainly a member of the Lower, or Earth, Moiety.

Family

Pete had a wife with whom he had a child named "Mary". The identity of this wife is unknown. (Waggoner, 13)

His second wife was Elizabeth LaMere, the eldest daughter of Oliver Lamere and Catherine Armel. After marrying their mother Elizabeth LaMere, Peter adopted Angel and Julia DeCora, and when they came of age, they set up next door to the Sampsons. (1886, 1889 censuses)

Land

On 9 December 1893, Peter Sampson received an allotment of 72.19 acres of land in Thurston County: the SW¼ NE¼ of Section 35 (42.272056, -96.489404) and Tract 4 of the same section (42.276318, -96.489785). (BLM-1)

On 8 March 1902, he received an allotment of 40 acres of land in Thurston County: the SE¼ NW¼ of Section 23, Township 026N, Range 009E. (BLM 2)

On 6 August 1914, Peter Sampson received an allotment of land in Thurston County: the NE¼ SW¼ of Section 35 (42.269013, -96.495078), Township 027N, Range 008E. (BLM-3)

On 30 December 1919, he received an allotment of 32.19 acres of land in Thurston County in the same Tract 4 mentioned above (1893). (BLM-4)

Death

He died on 2 January 1930 of double lobar pneumonia (1929-1930 census), and was buried at the Saint Augustine Mission Cemetery, Winnebago, Thurston County, Nebraska. (Find a Grave)
