Grace was born in 15 August 1886 in Winnebago, Thurston County, Nebraska. (Soc. Sec.) She was the daughter of Peter Sampson and Elizabeth LaMere. (1910 census, Soc. Sec.)
Name
The 1898 census gives her Hocąk name as Nuk-ka-kee-ah-win-kaw, which may be for Ną̄k’ági’ą́wįga, "She Scratches with Her Foot Bouncing Up and Down", from ną̄k’á, "to scratch with the foot"; gi’ą́, "to bounce up, bounce up and down"; -wį-, a feminine gender suffix; and -ga, a definite article suffix used in names. This could be a Wolf Clan name referencing the way canines scratch themselves.
Her birth order name was Hīnū́gā, which means "First Daughter," though in fact she appears to be the last. (1886-1892 censuses)
Education
In 1910-11 she was attending the Carlisle School. (1910 census) Waggoner tells us,
Angel's last sister left Carlisle by February of that year [1911].
The school officially discharged Grace Sampson, but she had
actually been "on leave" since the summer of 1909. She received
very good marks for her conduct throughout her school days.
The Arrow, without indicating she was Angel's sibling, portrayed
her as quaint and childish though she was in her early twenties,
"Who says Grace Sampson isn't getting ahead of the poor little
squirrels in gathering nuts?" or "Last Saturday after the sociable
Grace Sampson sent into her room and she saw a whole lot of
June bugs so she gathered a whole box full." Angel could not
manage to keep Grace away from her father's "clutches,"
anymore than she had Mary Sampson or Madelyn Rickman.
Consequently, Grace returned to the reservation and married
Phillip White, Jr., by 1917. (Waggoner, 179)
Marriage
The 1917 census records her being married to Isaac White, Jr. (b. 18 February 1883). She was still married to him as of the 1926 census. This marriage seems to have had no issue.
From 1931 - 1934, she was married to Louis Bigbear. (1931, 1934 censuses) This marriage also resulted in no children.
By 1937, she had married George Whitesnake. (1937 census) There were no children from this marriage.
Death
She passed away on 1 November 1963. She is buried at the Saint Augustine Mission Cemetery, Winnebago, Thurston County, Nebraska. (Find a Grave)
