Biography

Edward Chappell Sampson was born at Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England in 1845[1]. He was baptised at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 11th January 1846, the son of William Sampson and Rebecca (Chappell) Sampson. [2]

On the 1851 census, five year old Edward Chappel Sampson lived on King Street, Sutton in Ashfield with his parents, five siblings and his maternal uncle.[3]

The 1861 census shows 15 year old Edward C. living at home on King Street, with his parents and seven siblings.[4]

In 1871, Edward was a visitor in the household of Thomas & Ann Handley, (sister and brother-in-law) at 14 Market Place, Loughborough, Leicestershire. Also visiting on census night were his siblings Luke and Edith Sampson.[5]

He married Mary Jane White at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 15th June 1875.[6] Edward was a bachelor and grocer, of King Street. His father was William Sampson, grocer. Mary Jane was a spinster of Prospect Place, the daughter of George Broom White, miller. They married by licence, and witnesses were George Broom White, Rebecca White and John Craster Sampson.[7]

The 1881 census records Edward C. and Mary Jane Sampson living on King Street, Sutton in Ashfield, where Edward was a grocer. They had two children, Edward (3) and Winifred, (1)[8]

On the 1891 census, Edward and Mary Jane were still living on King Street where Edward continued the trade of grocer. Their two children, Edward and Winifred, lived with them.[9]

In the local trade directory for 1900, Edward C, Sampson was described as a "grocer, corn and seed merchant, & agent for W. A. Gilbey Lim, wine & spirit merchants".[10]

The 1901 census recorded Edward and Mary Jane on King Street, where he gave his occupation as grocer and agricultural seed dealer. Beneath was written "(Bottled wine and spirit licence) Their son Edward, aged 23, was an assistant in the business.[11]

He was listed in a 1908 trade directory as a seedsman, grocer, wine, spirit, ale and porter merchant, of King Street.[12]

In 1911, Edward Chappell and Mary Jane Sampson lived at 26 King Street, where his occupation was Seedsman. Their son Edward, now 33, lived with them.[13]

He died in Sutton in Ashfield on the 28th December 1914[14], aged 69 years.[15]
