Minnie was born in Harwich Township, Kent County, on June 6, 1871[1] to John Samson and Mary (Nichol) Samson.[2][3] By the time that Minnie was ten, her father had died and she was living in Chatham with her mother and sister.[4] She went on to become a public school teacher[1][5][6] and was still unmarried, living with her mother in 1911. At this time she was teaching at McKeough School.[7][8]
