Biography

Sweden
Augusta (Samuelsdotter) Anderson lived in Sweden.

Augusta was born on 30 Jul 1884 as the daughter of Samuel Berntsson and Christina Andersdotter. She was christened on August 8 the same year.[1]

This is her family in the household book for 1896-1906 - Grönegatan torp, Vabränna nr 4 in Veddige parish, Halland county (where descendants of Bette still reside.[2])

Household records

Her father, Samuel Berndtsson Vedberg was a carpenter (snickare) as was his father, Berndt Gunnesson (as you can see at the bottom of the picture).

Her mother, Christina Andersdotter had a daughter (born out of wedlock) before marrying Samuel Berndtsson Vedberg. Her name was Anna Lena, and she was born December 22, 1866. Samuel Berndtsson was her biological father even though the marriage of her parents didn't take place until exactly 1 year after the date of her birth. [3] [4]. Anna Lena had a son, Johan Albin, who was born out of wedlock, on 27 Jan 1885. At the time of his birth, she as his mother, is listed as Anna Lena Samuelsdotter.[5] Anna Lena left her son in the care of her parents when she emigrated to North America from Veddige, Halland, Sweden on 20 Feb 1891[6] where she worked as the 4th or 5th cook in her Uncle Carl Johan Berntsson/Weborg's home in Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York.[7][8][9]

Elin Wilhelmina (b 22 Apr 1904) is the illegitimate child[10] of her sister Betty Cecilia (b 25 Feb 1879)[11]

Carl Johan, Augusta's brother was born on 4 Aug 1881[12] and left home in March 1900, destination North America.

Johan Albin, her sister's son leaves home in 1901, destination Amerika.[13]

Augusta left her home on August 28, 1903, her destination was "Amerika".[14] When she left Sweden she was unmarried and used the name Augusta Wedberg according to the archives available at emiweb.eu

In this case I would put Wedberg as her “Last name at birth”. The change of patronymic practice started about 1850-1860 so by 1884 it should have been “normal” to use Wedberg. If you want to keep Samuelsdotter somewhere I suggest you put it in the field of “Other last names”.

The field for “preferred name” (which I edited) should only be for her first and/or middle name and nickname. As an example; my proper first name is Margareta, my preferred name is Maggie and other nicknames could be Magic (given to me by my coworkers).

Thanks you Maggie Andersson - Just to clarify - When someone has a patronymic name and a non-patronymic surname as their maiden name we don't show both as maiden name? Augusta's father and siblings took the non-patronymic name when Sweden encouraged people to stop use of patronymic practice. Sibling's family members (ancestors) still live on the property and use the name Wedberg. Her 2 married names were Anderson and Lundin, divorced Lundin, and took 1st married surname to use for the balance of her life.
