Biography

OBITUARY: Victor L. Sanchez went to be with the Lord on August 26, 2021 at the age of 89, after a short illness this month. He was born July 24, 1932 in Cuahtemoc, Mexico in the state of Chihuahua to Margarita and Jesus Manuel Sanchez.

As a young teenager he developed a love for baseball and was a pitcher on a team with a paid contract for about a year. He was very adventurous and moved to New Mexico under the Bacero Program in 1955 until he met his wife in 1957 in San Buenaventura, Chihuahua. After their marriage they moved back to New Mexico and he began another job in highway construction in Northern New Mexico for a couple of years during which his sons Victor Jr and Arturo were born. Then Victor was offered an opportunity in farming and ranching in Roswell where the family settled until 1976. Victor was a hard worker and worked very long hours harvesting cotton and other crops and maintaining the family’s farm mini zoo of cattle, sheep, chicken, etc. During this time his two daughters Margarita and Elena were born. Victor and the family had success when the Farmers Home Administration selected the family for Farm Family of the Year. While in Roswell he was president of a group called Cultura Mexicana which was a nonprofit which provided support to students in the area schools. His other past times included playing the accordion and singing with his family and friends. He had a great love for music especially Mariachi Music. Victor loved telling stories and had a good sense of humor and loved good company along with his good appetite. He loved watching wrestling, soccer, and baseball on T.V. He moved again in 1979 to San Jose, CA where he started a new career in carpentry, construction and handyman before moving back to Las Cruces, New Mexico in 2012. Victor became a parishioner of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and enjoyed all the church activities and fiestas and became a part of the church community for many years.

Victor is survived by his wife Guadalupe, two sons Victor “Serafin” (Isabel) and their daughter Carly, son Arturo and his daughters Rebecca, Crystal and Francesca. His daughters Margarita (Ralph) their sons Michael and Marcus Vickers, his children Josh and Shenoah and extended family, Daughter Elena (Mark) Seidlitz and their son Gabriel along with many other cousins and relatives.

Victor was preceded in death by his parents Margarita and Jesus Manuel Sanchez, his brother Ernesto, his sister Elena and mother in law Virginia “Gina” Padilla.

A Funeral Rosary will be celebrated on Saturday September 4, 2021 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at 1240 S. Espina Street in Las Cruces, NM with the Recitation of the Holy Rosary by Deacon Mark Seidlitz beginning at 10:00 A.M. and the Communion Service celebrated by Fr. Alejandro Reyes to follow at 10:30 A.M. Inurnment will take place at the IHM Columbarium.
