Biography

Thomas Elijah Sanders was born on 24 November 1861 in Pawnee Township, Sangamon, Illinois to Robert Elisha Sanders and Isabella Bridges.

He married Sarah Jane Frances Jenkins on 18 February 1884 in Sangamon County, Illinois and together they had thirteen children.

Thomas passed away on 14 November 1934 in Alton, Madison, Illinois and was buried the next day in Horse Creek Cemetery in Pawnee.

Obituary

Thomas Elisiah Sanders, 72, died early this morning at the home of his son, John Sanders, 553 East Third street, his death occurring a short time after his arrival there for an extended visit. Previously he had resided with a son near Godfrey.

Sanders was born Nov. 24, 1861 at Pawnee, Ill. He had resided in this area for the last 14 years. He had been in failing health for three years, but his condition had not been cause for alarm, and yesterday he came to Alton to visit his son here and probably remain for the winter.

Twelve children and his widow, Mrs. Sarah Sanders, survive. The children are John and Amiel of Alton, Virgil, Robert, Russel, and Mrs. Helen Mender, all of Pawnee, Mrs. Lizzie Fry and Ralph Sanders of Virden, Mrs. Edith Welch, Springfield, Mrs. Inez Markle and Mrs. Erma Wolf, Divernon and Mrs. Ruth Austin, La Salle.

Funeral rites, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m., at the residence of Virgil Sanders in Pawnee. Burial will be in Horse Creek cemetery. Cotton Hill county. The funeral cortege will leave Alton at 8 a.m., Thursday to go to Pawnee. The body may be seen this evening at the Streeper funeral home.
